Status:

$1,000 stipend following 150 service hours, expenses relating to job paid, i.e. gas money and up to 3 credit hours if partnered and approved with Northern Arizona University or other accredited university.

The Communications and Social Media will assist the Executive Director, Operations Assistant, and Board of Directors in creating digital newsletters in Joomla! format, updating websites on regular basis, update all social media sites in an effort to promote environmental stewardship of Oak Creek.

This position will routinely work with the Volunteer and Outreach Intern along with the Oak Creek Ambassadors to educate and inform the public on water issues in the Oak Creek Watershed.

The Oak Creek Watershed Council is a non-profit environmental advocacy organization that has worked for over 20 years to protect, preserve and improve the water quality and water resources of the Oak Creek Watershed.

Together with our supporters, board, staff and grassroots network we fulfill our mission by collecting accurate information on the health of our waters, identifying sources of pollution, collaborating with others to ensure environmentally-sound policy and practices and empowering the public to be good stewards of our water resources through education and outreach. The OCWC Board of Directors consists of dedicated individuals living throughout the watershed and the State of Arizona, who bring a variety of talents, skills and connections that greatly impact our success. Our goal over the next year is to grow our staff and increase our presence on the water and at the table where environmental decisions are made.

Who we are looking for:

An enthusiastic individual that possess excellent communication, writing and social skills. A well-rounded, creative, person willing to think outside the box to generate social change with a message of water consciousness and advocacy. The ideal candidate would be self-sufficient and possess the ability to work independently and with a team.

The job we need you to do:

General Responsibilities

• Engage and organize local communities through digital media to encourage volunteers and promote positive social change
• Work with Executive Director and Oak Creek Ambassadors to assist in and implement media outreach strategies that engage community groups and individuals representing all age groups of the watershed
• Regularly be on site in the field - digitally capturing the work of the Oak Creek Ambassadors and Friends of Oak Creek to be used in digital media campaigns
• Send out monthly digital newsletters with Joomla! platform to keep visitors and local up to date on the latest water conscious news in the Oak Creek Watershed
• Track Facebook, Twitter, Google + and generate monthly reports
• Make connections with local media outlets including television, newspapers, online publications and magazines

Other Duties

• Assist with promotion of cleanup events, educational events, program fundraising and other events online
• Digitally promote upcoming OCWC, Oak Creek Ambassador and Friends of Oak Creek events
• Become familiar with OCWC organizational and programmatic history and key issues and integrate those into on-going communications and relationships with volunteers, members and the public

What qualifies you for the job:

• Degree in natural sciences, sustainability, digital media with an environmental emphasis or working on degree that falls into any of those areas
• Experience/proficiency in digital and social media skills with an emphasis on Facebook, YouTube and Twitter
• Passion for community building around environmental issues
• Work or volunteer experience in a nonprofit setting a plus
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Must possess a valid state-issued driver’s license
• Must own or have access to a vehicle and computer for work-related use

Compensation:

The Oak Creek Watershed Council offers expenses stipend. If working in conjunction with college student, OCWC requires written permission from professor with regular meetings/updates from professor and student to be considered for school credit. If student quits or is dismissed from position due to poor performance prior to 150 hours of service, remuneration will not be issued.
